Things That Go in the Night

Spud is potty-trained.

(Cue hallelujah chorus)

But at night, his cup still runneth over.

So, the collective wisdom of the Internet is needed. How does one night-train a 3.5 year old?

This brain-taxing question was brought to you by backwards Works for Me Wednesday at Rocks in My Dryer. If you've got answers, she's got questions.

Ok, NOTHING to drink past, like, 6:00. Then, you may have to get him up right before you go to bed and have him go. He'll basically be sleepwalking to the bathroom. Once he wakes up dry, you'll know he's physically capable of making it through the night so you remove the diaper FOREVER! Whoopee!
That's all I've got! :) Good luck!

Well, I have no answers, as with each of my kids they each night-trained at a different point, no matter how little or how much they drank in the evening.

But I DID want to say that I enjoyed your post, esp the title.

I don't nighttime train my kids. A child wetting at night at age six is still considered "normal," by pediatricians.

So, I just let my kids' bladders and sleep patterns grow at their own pace. Our first child stayed dry at night when she was three. Our second ... when he was almost five. Our third is about to turn five, and might be dry one night a month ... maybe. She has been my heaviest and longest sleeper. It will take her longer.

I'll be back to see if you get any more comments my 3 year old was potty trained last Feb but now I think he has night and day mixed up. He holds in all day and wears a nappy/diaper at night, in the morning it is soaking!!

You've already heard this, but children's bodies mature at different paces. All of my children were different ages when they started staying dry at night. It did help us with our oldest to really limit her liquids after dinner. My SIL used to get up at a certain time (I think 2:00) in the night and take her daughter to the bathroom. The daughter didn't really wake up, but I can't imagine getting up in the night on purpose every night!!

Oh man, first, you can't night train anyone. It's a physiological process that comes with appropriate development only.

Helping make it easier and setting him up for success includes no drinking after supper etc.

I didn't realize you'd also grown up in AB! So cool. And thanks for all the comments you leave.

My son (will be 4 end of Feb) was fully daytime potty trained for 6 months before I chanced overnights. I also have a baby who wakes often during the night, so after I put her back down one of those times in the wee hours (harhar!) I would pick my son up, prop him up on the potty so he could go, then take him back to bed. We cut off drinks except the smallest sips of water/milk about one hour before bedtime. During our nighttime routine (teeth/jammies/books/songs/prayers) I have him go potty at least three times. He also gets out of bed a couple times before falling asleep to test the limits of our patience/squeeze out those last few drops. We let him get away with this because he does wake up dry! Over the last few weeks he's actually been waking himself up when he needs to go during the night so I don't wake him anymore. Good luck!

No advice here, I just wanted to say that I feel your pain sister! My 3.5 year old has been potty-trained for a long time, but night-time is still an issue for us.

I'm just trying to limit liquids in the evening & have some patience (not my strongest virtue).

I plan to buy a new car with the money I'll be saving once I no longer have to purchase pull-ups.

Good Luck (to both of us!)

It is so common-especially for boys-to take a little longer to night train. I had this exact conversation with my sil today. My 5 year old is dry 2 out of 7 nights. We just roll with it. And continue shelling out money for the pull ups for at night.

You're gonna hate me for this one. NONE of my kids have ever wet the bed. I don't know why. Genetics? I can feel the hatred......:-)

I wouldn't worry about the night time yet. Our pediatrician told us it varys and they should be dry through the night by 5. I can't do the cold turkey approach as I just don't want to get up more than the zillion times I do already...and change bedding, clothes, etc. I am thinking positive. Someday no pull-ups at night. It will just happen. Congrats on the potty training. Stop and LOVE that for a while. ;)
